After the long wait and much exerted effort by the SPO staffers to bring it to life, the Observer finally held the first day of their three days Basic Campus Journalism Training (BCJT) on July 4, 2024 anchored with theme “Pen to Power, Word in Action: The Role of Campus Journalism in the Prevalent World of the Digital Age” at Eastern Visayas State University-Ormoc Campus (EVSU-OC) Function Hall.
The program kicked off with the welcome remarks of the incoming Editor-in-Chief (EIC) Alexander Jr. M. Morfe, followed by the words of inspiration from the Observer adviser Mrs. Charo D. Angelio. She said that their journalism experienced back then was far different from the present.
After all the introductions and speeches, the program proceeded to the discussion by the resource speaker Dr. Ulderico B. Aviola, Head of the Administrative Office IV at VSU Baybay City Campus and Adviser of Amaranth. The discussion revolved around the topics “Reimagining The Role Of Campus Press in the Time of AI” and “Copy Reading and Headline Writing.”
After the lunch break, the program continued with the discussion by Mr. Gabriel B. Medalla, Former Observer Associate Editor in 2015, about “Editorial Writing.” Meanwhile, in the multimedia room, all the creatives and media department had a separate discussion with Mr. Dan Micheal Castaรฑares, Creative Director, Lead Videographer, and Editor of DMC Creatives, with the topic revolving around “Videography.”
The BCJT DAY 1 wrapped up with the SPO staff filled with additional knowledge and skills as journalists.
