The Observer of Eastern Visayas State University- Ormoc Campus orchestrated its eagerly expected Basic Campus Journalism Training (BCJT) from July 4-6, 2024. With the evocative theme “Pen to Power, Word in Action: The Role of Campus Journalism in the Prevalent World of the Digital Age,” the event aimed to kindle the flames of passion and proficiency in the hearts of aspiring journalists.
The inaugural day, July 4, began with a wave of enthusiasm as incoming Editor-in-Chief Alexander Jr. M. Morfe delivered a warm welcome, followed by an inspiring speech from adviser Mrs. Charo D. Angelio, who captivated the audience with tales of journalismโs evolution. The highlight of the day was an enlightening session by Dr. Ulderico B. Aviola on “Reimagining The Role Of Campus Press in the Time of AI” and “Copy Reading and Headline Writing,” which opened new vistas for the attendees. In the afternoon, Mr. Gabriel B. Medalla’s discussion on “Editorial Writing” and Mr. Dan Micheal Castaรฑares’ immersive workshop on “Videography” left participants brimming with newfound skills and inspiration.
On the next day, July 5, the energy was high as Ms. Analyn Singcol ignited a passion for capturing the energy of sporting events with an energizing lecture on sports writing. At the same time, Mr. Kenny Fenix Abella captivated the audience with his knowledge in TV broadcasting, cinematography, and desktop publishing. Joey Vincent Motel, who explored the depths of Investigative Writing, and Mr. Jim Yango Fantonial, who shared his wealth of knowledge about Broadcasting, made for an equally fascinating afternoon. The day concluded with Ed H. Tiquen’s visually enriching session on Photojournalism, which left participants in awe of the power of imagery.
The culminating day, July 6, was a crescendo of enlightenment and celebration. Ms. Erika Tan led the morning with a thought-provoking session on “Opinion Writing and Feature Writing,” encouraging participants to weave creativity and critical analysis into their work. This was followed by Ms. Irene Kay Descartin’s captivating workshop on “The Art of News Writing,” which underscored the paramount importance of truth and integrity. The day moved ahead to the highly anticipated turnover and award ceremony. Outgoing Editor-in-Chief Mary Alexane Montesclaros delivered a heartfelt farewell, filled with gratitude and hope for the future. Adhering to the Observer’s heritage, the new staff members solemnly swore an oath of office, pledging to uphold the legacy of the institution. Recognizing the dedication, talent and effort, the ceremony also highlighted and honored exceptional performances of the participants.
With moving words, Managing Editor Ms. Mari Joy Tumulak concluded the program, praising the training’sย triumphant success over three days. In addition to being an educational experience, BCJT 2024 was a life-changing journey that gave participants priceless insights, abilities, and memories that will always influence their journalistic endeavors.
