EVSU-OC suspends classes for Lunar New Year; aligns celebration with Cultural Heritage & Global Goals
ORMOC CITY – In a move that highlights both cultural inclusivity and global awareness, Eastern Visayas State University – Ormoc Campus (EVSU-OC) has announced the suspension of classes and office operations for tomorrow, February 17, 2026, in observance of the Chinese New Year.
The declaration adheres to Malacañang Proclamation No. 1006, designating the date as a Special (Non-Working) Holiday. Beyond compliance, the university’s observance underscores its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which advocates for the protection and safeguarding of the world’s cultural heritage (Target 11.4).
Charging Forward: The Year of the Fire Horse As the world welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse, a symbol of unbridled energy, passion, and rapid success, the university administration encourages the student body—the Industrialistas—to channel this dynamic spirit into their academic pursuits.
“This year’s zodiac sign embodies the drive and determination we strive to instill in our students,” said a representative from the Office of Student Affairs. “In line with SDG 4 (Quality Education), we hope this brief respite allows our learners to recharge so they can return with the ‘horse-like’ stamina needed to excel in their technical and professional studies.”
Strengthening Community Partnerships The holiday also serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted friendship between the Filipino and Chinese communities, reflecting SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By officially recognizing this significant cultural event, EVSU-OC fosters an inclusive environment that respects diversity and strengthens social cohesion within the Ormoc community.
Normal university operations are set to resume on Wednesday, February 18. The administration reminds all students and personnel to observe the holiday safely and meaningfully.
CULTURE MEETS GOALS. 🌏🏮 EVSU-OC observes the Lunar New Year not just as a holiday, but as a celebration of Cultural Heritage (SDG 11) and Community Partnership (SDG 17). Read more about how the Year of the Horse inspires our drive for Quality Education (SDG 4).
